MSOM Business Meeting Minutes, INFORMS National Meeting
November 18, 2002 (San Jose)

The meeting was called to order at 6:30pm by President Ananth Iyer. Ananth introduced the various officers for 2002-2003, Ravi Anupindi (VP), Jayashankar Swaminathan (Treasurer) and Panos Kouvelis (President Elect). He also introduced Kumar Rajaram as the MSOM-INFORMS liaison for the year. Ananth also described the web site http://www.prady.com/MSOM where members would soon be able to express their opinion on "what is operations management?".

Next, Jay Swaminathan, informed the society members that the society was doing well financially with $29330.00 in the account.

Don Eisenstein next announced the details pertaining to the 2002 MSOM student paper competition. He announced the names of the winners and the finalists.

Hu, University of Michigan, Business -- "Advance Demand Information and Safety Capacity as a Hedge Against Demand and Capacity Uncertainty"

 

SECOND PLACE (TIE):

Chen, MIT, OR Center -- "Coordinating Inventory Control Pricing Strategies"

Huh, Cornell, IE -- "A Continuous-Time Strategic Capacity Planning Model"

FINALISTS:

Golovachkina, Cornell, Johnson -- "Supplier Manufacturer Relationships Under Forced Compliance Contracts"

Ren, Wharton -- "An Empirical Analysis of Forecast Sharing in the Semiconductor Equipment Supply Chain"

Yi, CMU, GSIA -- "Vehicle Routing with Time Windows and Time-Dependent Rewards: A Problem from the American Red Cross"

 

Following that Yehuda Bassok, Greys Sosic and Sampath Rajagopalan provided details on the next MSOM and Multi-Echelon meeting to be held at USC, Los Angeles in June 2003. One notable feature in the conference is the inclusion of panel discussions following the presentation of a paper.

Nesim Erkip and Elif Akcali invited members to submit abstracts to INFORMS/EURO conference to be held in Istanbul, Turkey in July 2003.

Sridhar Tayur updated members that the MSOM Fellows of the year � Evan Porteus and Marshall Fisher would be speaking the next day at MSOM Fellows session (Tuesday).

Next, Tim Lowe encouraged submissions to the special issue of Manufacturing and Service Operations Management on Agricultural and Food Business.

Following that the outgoing editor in chief of M&SOM, Lee Schwarz , shared his thoughts and bitter-sweet experiences while launching M&SOM as a top tier academic journal. He also prepared a top 10 of why M&SOM is number one. Lee's contributions were greatly appreciated by everyone in the room and there was a roar of applause when he finished his speech.

Lee introduced the next editor in chief, Garrett Van Ryzin. Garrett after thanking Lee, explained some of the details related to the editorial changeover process and presented his thoughts on how the community could make M&SOM, the top tiered journal for Operations Management. He also invited opinions and ideas from the members.

Ananth Iyer asked the members for any other input that they had. After which, he thanked all the members and adjourned the meeting.
